Time to De-Stress

“The time to relax is when you don’t have time for it.” – Sydney J. Harris

Welcome to the February 2021 edition of TotalWellbeing, your guide to the 8 dimensions of wellbeing. This month it’s time to take a deep breath and de-stress. No matter how resilient you are, stress and anxiety can have an impact on your life in some way or another. It is important to be able to recognize the signs of stress and take steps to manage it on a day-to-day basis. This can be tricky as often we don’t feel as if we have time to take time for ourselves, but it is critical that we do so to avoid stress, burnout, and the symptoms that come with those including tension headaches, anxiety, insomnia, and other wellbeing issues. See below for some tips on managing stress with exercise as well as an infographic with more stress-related tips to help you unwind.

Please remember that your EAP is here for you to provide a variety of resources to manage stress. You have access to free and confidential counseling, wellness coaching, work/life balance tools, and more! Plus, an online resource library full of proactive self-help tools. Visit PersonalAdvantage for helpful articles, tips, health assessments, stress tests, and more!

Managing Stress with Exercise

Stress can make you feel drained, anxious, and even depressed. While there are several ways to manage runaway stress, none is as enjoyable and effective as a regular exercise routine.

We all deal with stress in our lives—due to both minor and major events. Try utilizing some new coping strategies to help you deal with difficult times more effectively.

“Numerous studies have shown exercise provides excellent stress-relieving benefits,” says Cedric Bryant, chief exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise. “And let’s face it, we all could do with less stress in our lives.”

How It Works

Exercise causes the brain to release endorphins, opium-like substances that ease pain and produce a sense of comfort and euphoria. It also encourages the nerve cells in the brain to secrete other neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which improve mood.

Question of the Month

What is one way that you may be able to add a daily habit to manage stress? This could be a quick breathing exercise, a short meditation session, engaging with your favorite stress-relieving hobby, or anything else you use to keep your stress levels in check. What’s stopping you?

December 2017: Physical Wellbeing and Stress

Get Involved!

Welcome to the December issue of TotalWellbeing! If you have been following TotalWellbeing you know that every month we focus on one of the 8 Dimensions of Wellbeing. As we come to the end of the year, stress can increase and your attention to your physical wellbeing may decrease. As the holidays bring forth stress around money for gift giving and around family gatherings, and the many holiday parties you may attend certainly don’t help your nutrition commitments. Please take this time focus on what matters, use your emotional resilience skills to de-stress, and focus on eating healthy.

For a closer look at this month’s topic and helpful resources please check out The Path and The Connection below or check out our newest infographic on Stress for some helpful information around stress in the US and how to managed a stressful situation in  a healthy way.

Tips for you:

Emotions are a healthy part of the human experience. Acknowledging emotions and understanding your personal stress style is the first step in beginning to control them. In this session, we will discuss a selection of customary stressors as well as techniques for exercising control over them.

The Connection: Get Involved

Wellbeing does not simply start and stop at the individual. Our community is connected to each of our own individual wellbeing in a huge way. When we are well we can better function within our community.  We can help our fellow humans thrive, and in turn, when our community is prospering, it helps each of us reach our goals as individuals. So why not help our community so we can all thrive together? Each month we will strive to bring you resources that can help you enhance the wellbeing of those around you or get involved with important causes.

Community Wellbeing Resources:

This month look at how you can expand your knowledge and skills within your community in regards to physical activities. Check out your local community’s website for senior centers where you could volunteer to help take people on a hike or to do yoga. Or look for other ways you can improve your, and others, physical wellbeing.

piggy bank brownWelcome to the July issue of TotalWellbeing! This month it’s time for everyone’s favorite topic, Financial Wellbeing. Smart, informed decisions are the key to building a financial foundation that you can grow from. Spend, save, and invest in smart ways. Be critical of information sources and be sure people you talk to have your best interest in mind. Be patient, save where you can and we promise small steps now will add up down the road. To help we have provided a retirement calculator and links to a community-based service-trading site to help you leverage your skills and save a buck while you’re at it. The Path: FinancialWellbeing and the Future

Financial Wellbeing is about making informed choices and building a foundation that you can grow from. It is important to consistently make the best decision possible with the information you have. That said, you also must make sure the information that you are basing your choices on is quality information and not coming from somewhere that does not have your best interest in mind. Even financial advisors can sometimes give poor advice or have ulterior motives, so take anything you hear with a grain of salt until you can do your research. Be smart, be patient, and don’t outspend your means.  Over time you will slowly but surely put in place a financial foundation that you can further build upon and use to perpetuate your life.

Tips for you:

Financial planning is unique for everyone. Different income, circumstances, and goals mean everyone needs something a little different. There are self-help tools and calculators all over the place to help you analyze and plan. Charles Schwab offers one such tool on their website to help plan for retirement and offers financial planning if needed.

November 2015:  Be Aware of Your Intellectual Wellbeing

Wellness through Awareness!

Welcome to the November issue of TotalWellbeing! In honor of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month we want to talk about Intellectual Wellbeing. This month we ask you to strive to make good habits that support your intellect and lifelong building of neuro-pathways in your brain. Read books, study music, lean new languages, dance, or try to do tasks with your non-dominant hand. All these things will build new pathways and help reinforce your brain as you get older. For a closer look at intellectual wellbeing and how it relates to our topics this month please read The Path, below.

As usual we invite to check out MINESblog. October was Breast Cancer Awareness month, so we took the opportunity to explore this topic from the eyes of caretakers and others who are caring for a loved one that has been diagnosed with a deadly disease. Our post explored the huge emotional and physical toll care-giving can have, and ways that a caretaker can support themselves while also supporting their loved one. On a lighter note, October 21st was “Back to the Future Day,” which for those of you who don’t know, was the day that Marty and Doc traveled to in the movie “Back to the Future 2.” In honor of this fun occasion, we took some time to look at the top advancements in health care, employee benefits, and mental health since the movie’s release in 1989. Check it out!

The Path

Intellectual wellbeing, like any of the dimensions of wellbeing we discuss, is something that you should strive to nurture every day and throughout your life. Intellect is something that you can grow but you must also maintain it. Especially as you get older it becomes increasingly important that you strive to feed your brain and keep it busy to avoid losing any of your cognitive functioning. Make it fun. Choose puzzles or games that you enjoy, but that will also engage your memory or complex thinking. It can be anything from doing Sudoku puzzles in the morning all the way to dedicating yourself to learning a new language or a musical instrument. The goal here is to build new neuro-pathways. Over time various factors such as disease, lifestyle habits, and environmental contamination, can breakdown pathways in your brain and the more pathways you have already built, the more prepared your brain will be for whatever might happen. Intellectual Wellbeing resources:

No matter what your age it is important to exercise your memory. Great ways to do this include puzzles and learning new things like a musical instrument or a foreign language. The ways you can expand your mind are endless. Check out some great tips and facts about improving your memory from HelpGuide.org by clicking below.

Many cultures believe in Chakras (shock-ras) which are, simply put, energy centers in your body that govern various aspects of your physiology. We will stay away from any religious aspects of these, such as their Buddhist symbolism, and instead focus on the general concept behind them to bring you more ways to nurture your body as well as mind. Click here to see a complete list of the 7 chakras and their properties.

Chakras to nurture this month: Crown and Heart

In order to support your intellectual wellbeing it will be important to be aware of, and nurture, your Third Eye and Throat Chakras. Your Third Eye Chakra, located on your forehead, is the location of your center for intelligence and wisdom, while your Throat Chakra is right where you think it would be. No surprise your Throat Chakra is the center for communication and expression. The reason these two are important to intellectual wellbeing is that in order for ideas and wisdom to prosper and spread we not only need to have free thought but also free expression to share the ideas and wisdom that we create as individuals. Support your centers of intelligence by creating and thinking outside the box, but don’t stop there, share your ideas and get others to do the same. Now get out there and have fun and be well!

Welcome to the October issue of TotalWellbeing! This month we are going to look at our wellness topic, Spiritual Wellbeing, as it pertains to another important theme for October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Path

Spiritual wellbeing could be defined as our level of peace and harmony tied to our sense of purpose within the world. Now where does Spiritual Wellbeing play a part in all Breast Cancer Awareness Month? In a word, hope. More specifically, maintaining positive spiritual wellness and remaining resilient when you or a loved one are faced with a diagnosis is hard — but crucial. Maintaining a positive state of mind has also been proven to impact treatment outcomes and limits despair during the darkest times in life. Not only does a high level of spiritual wellbeing make you a more resilient person during bad times but studies show that those that have overcome hardships have higher levels of happiness overall. This is due to a higher awareness of the small things in life and appreciation for the happier times in life. So this all just goes to show that good or bad, a positive, balanced mind can make all the difference. Spiritual Wellbeing resources:

May 2015:  Be Aware of Your EnvironmentalWellbeing

Wellness through Awareness!

Welcome to the May issue of TotalWellbeing! As summer is around the corner and we begin to shed our winter layers and enjoy the great outdoors we wanted to take a moment and talk about the relationship with the environment and our wellbeing. From global climate change and mass pollution, to local weather patterns and seasonal allergies, environmental wellbeing has far reaching effects on both the macro and micro scale. It is this near and far nature of the global environment, and its effect on peoples’ wellbeing all across the world that must be taken into account when we continue to interact with our own environment throughout our lives. To explore this dimension more closely please read The Path, below.

As always we invite you to check out the MINES blog to see latest discussions about well being topics and tips on staying healthy and stress free. The Path

Environmental wellbeing is a hot topic these days, but its importance cannot be understated. The environment feeds us, gives us water to drink, provides the air we breathe, and more. If we want our environment to keep providing these things for us, we must take care of it and in turn the environment will continue to take care of us. The old saying “think globally, act locally” has never been more true. Always be aware of how your actions affect your local environment and in turn how your local environment contributes to the larger global scale of things. Because what affects your neighborhood’s stream, affects your state’s rivers, which then affect the world’s oceans.

Chakras to nurture this month: Crown and Third-Eye Chakras

In order to support your environmental wellbeing it will be important to be aware of and nurture your Root and Solar Plexus Chakras. The Root Chakra in the base of your spine, and the Solar Plexus Chakra located just above your naval, are your center will, motivation, vitality, sense of survival, grounding, and stability. These Chakras can be supported by doing things that invigorate your senses and that bring you a sense of satisfaction. April 2015:  Be Aware of Your Intellectual Wellbeing

Wellness through Awareness!

Welcome to the April issue of TotalWellbeing! This month we’ve got our eyes on Intellectual Wellbeing. As with most of the areas of wellbeing we talk about, intellectual wellbeing is something that you cultivate and nurture throughout your entire life, constantly building on new ideas, experiences, and ways of thought. Practice makes perfect and intelligence is no exception. In order to expand your knowledge and nurture your brain, you have to step out of your comfort zone and seek out new ideas and fresh experiences. To explore this dimension more closely please read The Path, below.

Swing on over to the MINES blog to check out our latest post by Dr. Robert Mines which takes a look at incivility and bullying in the workplace. We can’t stress enough about the importance of creating a comfortable, trusting work environment where people feel safe. When employees have to work in fear of being bullied or discriminated against it is not only toxic to the company’s productivity, but the employees’ mental and physical wellbeing is also at risk.

Don’t forget to check out  important resources such as our blog and LinkedIn showcase pages to make sure you don’t miss anything.

The Path

Intellectual wellbeing is something that you must use or loose. The brain is just like any other part of your body, if you fail to use it then it will atrophy. Intelligence is critical to understanding your place in the world, and making the world we live in a better place for all. So to truly nurture your intellect, you owe it to yourself to constantly seek out knowledge and be open to new ideas. Studying various subjects, talking to new people, learning a new language or instrument, and going out and seeing new places are all great ways to gain insight and shine a light on the corners of your brain that were once dark. Many cultures believe in Chakras (shock-ras) which are, simply put, energy centers in your body that govern various aspects of your physiology. We will stay away from the spiritual aspects of these and instead focus on the concept behind them to bring you more ways to nurture you body as well as mind. Chakras to nurture this month: Crown and Third-Eye Chakras

In order to support your intellectual wellbeing it will be important to be aware of and nurture your Crown and Third-Eye Chakras. Located on the top of your head and in the middle of your head respectively, these energy centers act as your conduits for intelligence, wisdom, intuition, and perception, among many other aspects. You can nurture your Crown and Third-Eye Chakras by keeping your mind open to new ideas, by stepping out of your comfort zone and exploring new experiences, reading new books, and generally seeking out interests and hobbies. March 2015:  Be Aware of Your Financial Wellbeing

Wellness through Awareness!

Welcome to the March issue of TotalWellbeing! This month we’re setting our sights on financial wellbeing. After all it is in the middle of tax season and finances are already on a lot of our minds. But that’s the thing about financial wellbeing; when are finances not on our minds? Financial wellbeing can be one of the biggest sources of stress in life. This is because much of our wellbeing in other areas of life is tied to our financial situation. But don’t be fooled, more is not always better. While it is critical to have enough money to cover basic needs for yourself and those that depend on you, more money does not always equate to increased happiness. To explore this dimension more closely please read The Path, below.

If you had your eye on the MINES blog last month, you may have had the pleasure of reading a very insightful look into the world of consumer-directed healthcare and the role of technology as we move forward into the unknown of the healthcare frontier. If you missed it, don’t worry you can still head over to our blog to check out parts 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Make sure to follow us on our blog and LinkedIn showcase pages to make sure you don’t miss anything, and share any wellbeing stories that you have by hitting one of the Share buttons above so that you can help bring wellbeing to others who may need some inspiration. The best wellbeing stories will be featured in the quarterly BalancedLiving Magazine and authors could also receive a $5 gift card! See you next time!

The Path

Paying rent, buying food, saving up for something special, or paying off debt; these are just a few examples of common financial events that we might face on a day-to-day basis. From the time you start getting allowance as a child, to your first job as a teenager, your career as an adult, and onward to your retirement in the twilight years, money is something that must be managed throughout life and a lot of our happiness and wellbeing along the way is anchored to our successes and failures within the financial realm. The bright side is that much of our perception of financial success is in our minds. Once we have enough money to cover our basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing, how much more money you need to be happy is up to you. Don’t listen to those who say the only metric for success is monetary. Figure out what you want and carve out your own path.  Financial Wellbeing resources:Rising living expenses, high interest rates, unexpected expenditures, and loss of income are just some of the many reasons that you may find yourself in the midst of financial troubles. This article from Livestrong.com looks at the effects of money trouble on families and discusses some strategies to get your money in order and get back on track to financial wellbeing!

Chakras to nurture this month: Root and Solar Plexus Chakras

In order to support your financial wellbeing it will be important to be aware of and nurture your Root and Solar Plexus Chakras. Located in the base of your spine and your belly respectively, the Root and Solar Plexus are your centers for willpower, motivation, survival, as well as stability, making these centers ideal for trusting your gut, keeping focused, and having the will to remain frugal with your spending. This one’s basically about good decision-making, so nurture these chakras by getting plenty of sleep, avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, and reaching out to people you trust. Now get out there, have fun, and be well!

Wellness through Awareness!

Welcome to the February issue of TotalWellbeing! This month we’re talking Emotional Wellbeing. It is critical to stay on top of this dimension of wellbeing as your emotions can have a huge impact on your perception and performance in other areas of your life. It’s not all about being happy either. It is about understanding your feelings and being able to handle and balance your emotions, both good and bad, in a healthy and productive way. This comes from learning to focus on the positives in your life, learning to manage your stress, and building good habits and productive hobbies, into your lifestyle to support your emotional goals. To explore this dimension more closely please read The Path, below.

Important news this month, MINES has released our new training catalog for 2015! This year we are adding 16 great new programs and trainings, offering all new nutrition and Alzheimer’s focused programs, and have even hand-picked complementary programs for our new suggested training series. You can view and download our new catalog here!

If you have been following our blog you would know that last month MINES celebrated our 34th anniversary as a company, so thank you to all the great people and organizations that have made it possible for us to help people for so many years. Also on the MINES blog we saw a great story about MINES’ new telemedicine service, Call-A-Doc Plus, which helped highlight just how important it is to have easy access to care because medical issues rarely wait for a convenient time to strike.

And just a friendly reminder, please send any inspiring stories, wellbeing techniques that you use, or any other great ways you’ve found to stay mindful and balanced to communications@minesandassociates.com or just click one of our Share buttons. The best wellbeing stories will be featured in the quarterly BalancedLiving Magazine and authors could also receive a $5 gift card! Heart Blue

Emotional wellbeing is on the other side of the coin than physical wellbeing, and can be a little harder to stay aware of than its physical counterpart as there are a lot of subconscious and chemical factors that play a role in how we feel emotionally from day to day. These factors are a major part of why it is critical to nurture your emotional wellbeing and build healthy habits that support the things in your life that you can control. Staying mindful, reducing stress, and not sweating the small stuff are things you can focus on so that you can spend your energy where it matters most in your life.
