Making Sense of Medical Advice
February 14, 2011

A couple of years ago I was visiting my sister in Arizona. During lunch, I ordered a diet soda, as I did almost every time I sat down at a restaurant. She stared at me in disbelief and gasped, “You can’t drink that; you may as well be drinking poison!” My sister can be quite dramatic and it is always in my best interest to not argue with her. For quite a few minutes I listened to her explanation of why diet soda is bad for you. She had just read the new “it” book and I didn’t have a leg to stand on so I pushed the soda away. Not because I was certain what she was speaking was the truth, but I anticipated her talking about this book well into our lunch and that wasn’t an option. Although – I have to admit, I do look at diet soda differently; there is always that lingering, “what if?” in the back of my mind.
