Ten Tips for Dads After Divorce

October 26, 2010

Initially, after my parents divorced, I only spent the summers with my Dad. Although the divorce was a transition for me, it seemed to be even more of a transition for him. Hair-brushing, Barbies and pink wasn’t really up his alley. He tried so hard to make the stuff he enjoyed exciting for me and I love him so much for that, but he was pretty clueless.

He finally gave up the day he insisted on throwing a football with me. I was nine, and football wasn’t exactly my idea of fun. He had to know it was a bad idea when I ducked every time he threw the ball to me. He was so persistent in explaining how I needed to line my fingers up with the laces, exactly what I should do when I catch it and the famous “keep your eye on the ball” line. Well, I finally caught it but not without a blood-curdling cry. My ring finger started swelling up and turning blue, and of course I was wearing a ring. He tried to act like it was no big deal but I could see the fear in his face as my finger just kept getting bigger and the ring kept getting tighter. Next stop: Emergency Room.

This week’s article offers some great tips to avoid tears and frustrations as a single dad, but it’s up to you to avoid the Emergency Room.
